Playa del Carmen Beach Update: Sargassum Conditions Heading Into September 2026

If you’re looking for a Playa del Carmen sargassum update, Playa del Carmen beach conditions, or trying to figure out which beaches are looking best heading into September 2026, here’s a fresh look at three popular beaches in the area.

Playa 88 Beach Update

Playa 88 is looking much better than it did earlier in the summer. There is still some murkiness and some sargassum around, but overall the conditions are pretty decent.

The water looked similar to several other beaches around Playa del Carmen, although in some areas it appeared slightly cleaner and less brown.

If you’re looking for a quieter option and don’t need perfectly clear Caribbean water, Playa 88 is a reasonable choice right now.

Playa Esmeralda Sargassum Update

Playa Esmeralda is still in rougher shape compared with some of the other Playa del Carmen beaches.

The freshwater coming from the cenote helps create some clearer-looking sections, but the beach itself still had areas with sargassum, debris, darker water, and less attractive conditions.

The cenote can make Playa Esmeralda unique, but the freshwater can also sometimes have a noticeable smell.

For current conditions, I would personally choose another Playa del Carmen beach if your priority is cleaner-looking water and sand.

Playa Mamitas Beach Update

Playa Mamitas was one of the better-looking beaches I checked.

The water was clearer in certain areas, and overall the beach looked nicer than Playa Esmeralda and slightly better than many of the nearby beaches.

That said, Playa Mamitas is also extremely popular and can get very crowded. If you want better-looking water and don’t mind the crowds, it is one of the stronger options in central Playa del Carmen right now.

Is There Still Sargassum in Playa del Carmen?

Yes. Sargassum is still present around Playa del Carmen, and conditions can vary significantly from one beach to another and even from one section of the same beach to another.

The good news is that conditions are noticeably better than they were during some of the heavier sargassum periods earlier in the season.

There also appears to still be decomposed sargassum and sediment in parts of the water, which can make the Caribbean Sea look more brown or murky even when there isn’t a huge amount of fresh seaweed sitting on the shoreline.

Beach conditions can also change quickly depending on wind, currents, cleanup efforts, rainfall, and the time of day.

Best Playa del Carmen Beach Right Now?

From these three beaches, Playa Mamitas was my favorite for overall water conditions, while Playa 88 was a decent quieter alternative.

Playa Esmeralda was still the weakest of the three during this check.

But this is exactly why checking recent beach reports matters. A beach that looks great today can look completely different a few days later.
